The Belmont Stakes: Everything You Need to Know
by Elliman Editors
June 2018
As Justify trots up to the starting gate this Saturday for the 150th annual running of the Belmont Stakes, over 90,000 spectators will pack the grandstands in hopes of witnessing the elusive Triple Crown. Justify is looking to join a rare club of just 12 other racehorses in history to have competed the feat and the first since American Pharoah in 2015, with whom Justify shares a trainer in Bob Baffert.
Will you be among those hoping to see history made? It might be easier than you think.
Belmont Park, located in Elmont, NY is a mere 8.5 miles from midtown Manhattan and takes about 35 minutes via the Long Island Rail Road for $15 roundtrip.
With crowd and betting favorite Justify holding the post No. 1 position, what better way to spend your Saturday afternoon than a chance to witness a historical sports moment? It might well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Here are some tips if you plan to attend:
Buy Your Tickets in Advance
Tickets may sell out before you arrive. Guaranteed general admission to the park is $30 and Clubhouse tickets are $60 (more here: https:www.belmontstakes.comticketsgeneral-admission ). Feeling fancy? Box seats start at $425.
Be the Early Bird
Admission gates open at 8:30 am and the first race begins at 11:35 am. For those without reserved seats, arrive early enough and you could snag a coveted bench along the track apron or position near the rail. If you do, hold it. Remember, the best viewing spot on the rail is not at the finish line but farther up the home stretch.
Use Public Transportation
The MTA beefs up its schedule to accommodate the race day crowd. If you do choose to drive consider that traffic slows heavily around noon, parking is $40-$150 and the best spots are near the exits.
Dress Comfortably
The forecast calls for potential rain and the weather can be unpredictable. Make sure your attire is versatile enough for any unexpected changes so you’re comfortable all day long.
