City Guide: Jersey City, the Hashtag Tour

Jersey City is probably most famous for its reflection pool views of lower Manhattan, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. But did you also know it has one of the largest artist communities in the country and, it is said, the best diner options in the world? Today, with the help of Instagram, we’re going to take a hashtag tour through Jersey City to give you a taste of what New Jersey’s second largest city is all about. Let’s go! Downtown: Jersey City’s downtown, less than a 10-minute PATH ride from Manhattan, has exploded with eclectic dining options in recent years. With pedestrian-only traffic in many areas, it is also a great destination for families. Views:  From the perspective of Jersey City you get the type of enviable skyline views of New York City that those who live on the island rarely enjoy. That’s right. That postcard photo you love so much with a glittering vista of lower Manhattan? It was probably taken from Jersey City.   Street Art :  With its proximity to New York City and affordable workshop space, Jersey City’s artistic community has thrived. In fact, The Atlantic named Jersey City #10 on its list of America’s Top Artistic Cities, edging out more well known rivals like Boston and Philadelphia. Lady Liberty :  Short of a ferry ride, there is no batter place to take in the view of the Statue of Liberty than from Jersey City, which has long been a home to immigrants looking to make a new life in the land of opportunity. If you want to get even closer, it’s just a quick trip to Liberty State Park and Ellis Island, where so many of our ancestors first stepped foot in the New World. The Colgate Clock :  Move over Big Ben. Ok, not quite. But the Colgate Clock, at 50 feet wide, is among the top five largest timepieces in the world. Built in 1924, it is a throwback to Jersey City’s era as a manufacturing powerhouse. It was moved to its current location on the Hudson River waterfront in 2005. Empty Sky :  Empty Sky is New Jersey’s official memorial to the victims of September 11th. Located in Liberty State Park and designed by Jessica Jamroz and Fredric Schwartz, it was dedicated September 10, 2011. The Diners : Jersey City is often referred to as the best diner city in the world and White Mana might be its most famous example. Purchased and relocated from the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, White Mana is an historic landmark that embodies Jersey City’s image as unpretentious and unexpected.
