The Hamptons are known as the premier summer destination, but how can you take advantage of all it has to offer during COVID-19? Elliman Insider sat down with Douglas Elliman agent Martha Gundersen to find out which local places she recommends to catch a bite, and how she sees the Hamptons change from June to September.
Elliman Insider: Why do you love the Hamptons in the summer?
MG: I love the ocean and bays. Anytime I can get in or near the water is a good day.
EI: How can you still enjoy the Hampton’s summer months during COVID-19?
MG: If you are lucky to have a boat, paddle board or surfboard this is a perfect place. Also, everyone is getting outdoors more to engage in activities like walking and biking.
EI: Where’s the best place to grab a bite that only the locals know about?
MG: Red Horse Market (grocery store that offers delivery and takeout) or Fresno Restaurant in East Hampton. These are great spots and Fresno is back to seated, outdoor dining, perfect for the summer.
EI: What do the Hamptons have that other summer destinations or beach-focused neighborhoods may not have?
MG: World-famous private and public beaches. You can also walk for miles on the sand, passing by massive estates and preserved land. This allows for bird and nature watching, especially good for social distancing—plus, the sunsets are amazing.
EI: How do the Hamptons change during each month (June, July, August, early September). Any trends you notice either in weather, people, or even the beaches?
MG: More crowded for sure! June through September are so beautiful with lush lawns, flowers, trees and gardens. This year, people tend to be much less formal. That is probably due to no socializing. I like the change—I even see people walking in what looks like their pyjamas when they go to get coffee.
