Neighborhood Guide: Greenwich, CT the Hashtag Tour
by Elliman Editors
January 2018
Known as the ‘Gateway to New England,’ Greenwich, Connecticut has held sway as one of New York City’s most desired suburban destinations ever since the first railroad tracks were laid between the two in 1848. With its pastoral countryside and proximity to the Long Island Sound, Greenwich — a mere 40 minutes from Midtown Manhattan — feels a world apart.
We sat with Elliman’s Robin Kencel , who has lived and worked in Greenwich for more than 23 years, to get a local’s view of this famous enclave and offer her top picks of where to eat, shop, relax and more. So, with the help of Robin (and Instagram) let’s tour Greenwich!
Dine : Much of Greenwich’s early history was dominated by agriculture and you can tap into that rural past by visiting Greenwich’s locally sourced restaurants. “You absolutely have to try Back 40 Kitchen,” advises Kencel. The restaurant — known for its local, organic ingredients — was recently named among the best farm-to-table experiences in the country by Travel & Leisure.
Shop : A stroll along Greenwich Avenue will offer shopping for all types, “but if you’re looking for something special definitely stop at Richards,” Kencel says. The elegant, bi-level showroom features upscale fashion options and its service is renowned. “Everything there is carefully curated for high end women and men’s fashions.”
Relax : Positioned on the lip of the Long Island Sound, Greenwich offers water lovers multiple means for escape. “For maximum relaxation, head over to Tod’s Point in Greenwich Point Park. In the winter it’s a great getaway to think and in the summer season it offers a host of activities including swimming, sailboarding, fishing and a whole lot more.”
Get Inspired: If you’re seeking artistic release, Greenwich’s Bruce Museum has you covered. This world-class institution features influential exhibitions on art (such as the Andy Warhol shown above), as well as science and natural history.
Unplug : The area surrounding Greenwich is well known for its various hiking trails. Kencel recommends taking a walk among nature to unplug. “When I want to rebalance, I hit any of Greenwich’s many walking trails or visit the Audubon Center, which always lifts my spirits.”
