December 2020
With a view of Grand Army Plaza, located minutes away from the majestic facade of the main Brooklyn Library branch and across from Prospect Park, 1 Prospect Park West , Brooklyn, constructed in 1925, has more than just a stellar location to its name. The building, developed by Sugar Hill Capital Partners and represented by Elliman’s Patty LaRocco , Doug Bowen and Zia O’Hara , is ideal for anyone looking to live in modern surroundings without forgetting historic architectural roots. The designers behind this new development stayed true to the building’s prewar scheme while updating and re-imagining all components of the lobby, residence units and amenities.
Before it was turned into a condominium building, 1 Prospect Park West used to be headquarters to the Knights of Columbus with amenities for members. Now, its interiors have been designed by Brooklyn- and Hudson Valley-based firm Workstead , which also designed a special lighting line, the Park Collection , concurrently with the building interiors.
Featured in Elle Decor , Workstead describes how they rose to the challenge of updating 1 Prospect Park West for new residences without forgetting its history.
“When developing the layout, we worked to showcase classic prewar symmetry, channeling the elegance and refinement that defined the time period,” — Ryan Mahoney of Workstead
Inside and throughout its 64 units, Workstead preserved historical interior arches while adding refined details that evoke the building’s 1920s pedigree. “When developing the layout, we worked to showcase classic prewar symmetry, channeling the elegance and refinement that defined the time period,” Ryan Mahoney of Workstead says. “You’ll see deep thresholds with arched openings, narrow boards, reclaimed heart-pine flooring, and trim and molding that speak to the prewar typology.” Read the full Elle Decor article here .
In the kitchens, Workstead custom designed nearly everything: “All of the cabinet poles, handles, and millwork were specifically made for this project—even down to the little porcelain knobs,” Mahoney says. The countertops and backsplash are of honed Estremoz marble, and the front and side of the island are of Calacatta Vagli marble. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer and Wolf gas range, wall oven, steam oven, and warming drawers.
With plenty of amenities that include a fully-equipped fitness center, basketball court, children’s playroom, library, private art gallery and roof terrace that includes secret gardens and an apple orchard, 1 Prospect Park West incorporates the perfect balance of modernized and thoughtful outdoor and interior spaces to relax in.
