Waterfront Living at one of Boston’s Most Unique Addresses
by Elliman Editors
April 2018
Situated within the historic Charlestown Navy Yard on Pier 7, 65 Constellation Wharf isn’t your typical waterfront property. From 1800-1974 the Charlestown Navy Yard supported the United States Navy, was a hub for innovation and a home to Navy officers, sailors and Marines. Now a historic site, the heart of the original Navy Yard is open to visitors year-round. As a reminder of what the Navy Yard once was, the neighbors of Constellation Wharf include the USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” the oldest and most storied warship in the U.S. Navy, and the USS Cassin Young. The waterfront location and deep-rooted connection to American history make Constellation Wharf one of Boston’s most unique addresses.
The Neighborhood
Located on the waterfront with incredible views of the downtown Boston skyline, Constellation Wharf also enjoys close proximity to downtown Charlestown and the gas light district, one of the oldest parts of the city. Between the Navy Yard and Charlestown, there’s plenty to eat, see and do within this historic neighborhood. We’ve chosen some highlights to explore.
History
USS Constitution Museum

Whether resident or visitor, the USS Constitution Museum is a must-do, especially when it’s in your own backyard. The museum is open daily, but the ship is only open Wednesdays through Sundays, so plan accordingly. To learn more about the history of the Navy Yard, stop at the Visitor’s Center. The Charlestown Navy Yard and USS Constitution also happen to be along the Freedom Trail , the 2.5-mile red lined route past historically significant sites around Boston.

The Warren Tavern

After working up an appetite from your trek to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument, it’s time for a hearty meal. For good food and history, The Warren Tavern —the oldest tavern in Massachusetts—is the place. Established in 1780, Paul Revere and George Washington were regular patrons. The ambiance has a colonial, cozy feel and is a great spot to grab a burger and a beer. It’s not a tourist hot-spot, so the crowd is low-key and draws mostly locals.
Pier 6

For waterfront dining, check out Pier 6 . Located within the Charlestown Navy Yard, you don’t have to venture far for delicious local seafood and seasonal ingredients. In nice weather dine on the outdoor roof deck or patio, and on colder days enjoy the view inside through the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors.
Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar
For another local neighborhood go-to, try Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar . The restaurant is owned by John Moore, a Massachusetts native who lived in Charlestown for 18 years. The food has received a Zagat rating of “excellent” multiple times and most recently the restaurant received a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2016.
Legal Oysteria
Part of the Massachusetts institution that is Legal Seafood, Legal Oysteria is within minutes of the Charlestown Navy Yard. Serving coastal Italian-style seafood with a focus on freshness, other menu items include brick oven pizzas, pork osso buco and rib eye steak.
