What’s Next in Kitchen Design? We Say Paint It Black.
by Elliman Editors
January 2021
The use of monochromatic color in kitchen design is something we’ve seen for decades. Remember all-I-can-see-is-avocado-green throughout the 60s? And more recently, we rarely see a kitchen that isn’t all white with subway tile backsplash.
Today, more homeowners are embracing darker hues for their kitchens. Specifically, black.
According to Architectural Digest , “sophisticated homeowners are exploring shiny black cabinets, black marble countertops with striking white veins, black floors, and even black appliances.”
While black can sometimes make a room feel more formal in its sophistication, it is truly versatile. Utilizing black as a neutral allows for more opportunity to incorporate playful design elsewhere. In New York City, an Art Deco-inspired penthouse at Odell Clark Place offsets its black cabinetry and countertops with brass hardware and geometric tile floors.

All-black kitchens offer great depth and symbolize someone who isn’t afraid to take risks. In fact, utilizing the color as a standard allows any additional design details to pop. For example, this Hamptons home fully embraces black in the kitchen. The walls and ceilings are painted in an off-black, while the beams, trim and cabinetry are made a darker black in order to add definition to the space. The final result is a rich, modern, stylish chef’s kitchen.

Those new to monochromatic design might want to approach the trend by first experimenting with one all-black feature. Perhaps just black flooring, or black cabinetry. Homeowners will find how naturally black feels alongside concrete, wood and metal finishes, as seen in a contemporary Long Island, NY home and sleek Ritz Carlton condo on Singer Island, FL.

Black provides a striking visual surprise in the kitchen. So, if you are looking to make a chic statement with a specific hue, take the advice of Mick Jagger and “paint it black.”
