The Schermerhorn family dated back to the 1600's as prominent players in New York shipping. In 1838 the Schermerhorn brothers purchased land to create a ropewalk- a very long path needed for docking rope to be ""walked"" while it was twisted into shape. Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont feared this would mar the affluent residential character of the neighborhood. He used his political influence to prevent the city's approval of the ropewalk. The Schermerhorns then divided the block for magnificent homes to be built. 149 Clinton was commissioned by a prominent physician and designed in the Modern Renaissance Revival Style. A fourth story was added later on, barely visible over the ornate bracketed cornice.
