Named for Robert Murray, a wealthy Irish merchant whose farm once covered the area, today’s Murray Hill has become a magnet for young professionals and families who might have originally been lured by the lively nightlife but stayed for new high-rise condo developments on the east side. Portions of the west side have been granted landmark status; in the 1900s, these row houses, mansions, and carriage houses were owned by wealthy New Yorkers including Theodore and Eleanor Roosevelt, and today are occupied by consulates and missions to the nearby United Nations. Cultural institutions include Scandinavia House and The Morgan Library & Museum, an architectural gem housing a legendary collection of books, drawings, and artifacts.
