Swale House has seen a parade of notable and influential residents, including the distinguished headmaster of Richmond School, James Tate. During its time as a boarding house, one of its young residents was none other than Charles Dodgson, better known to the world as the beloved author Lewis Carroll.

The Pease family were well-known Quakers, with Joseph Pease, a pioneering figure who established the world’s first passenger railway, among their ancestors. In 1908, Owen Pease added the Ballroom to the rear of Swale House, where it played host to extravagant gatherings throughout the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1950s, the Ballroom had come under the ownership of the district council, serving as their meeting chamber for several years. After a period of disuse, The Ballroom was eventually transformed into the luxurious permanent residence that it is today.
